Long-lost 'Star Wars' blooper reel unveiled
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there were bloopers: Obi Wan Kenobi making faces at the camera after being whacked by Chewbacca. And imperial stormtroopers looking comical while blowing open a door on the Death Star.
These are among the scenes from a blooper reel of the original "Star Wars" movie filmed in the 1970s that was revealed at this year's Comic-Con, Mashable reported.
"For years, Lucasfilm was unable to answer that question, or even confirm whether such a reel existed. Then its editor and author, J.W. Rinzler, uncovered the reel while trawling the archives for his 'Making of' series. Rinzler screened the result for a small audience at Comic-Con on Friday — the first time it had been seen in 36 years," Mashable said.
But Mashable said the reel is not likely to be shown to more people due to "copyright issues."
"Audience members were asked not to make video or audio recordings of the historic reel," it said.
After five prequels-sequels in the last 36 years, the film has since been renamed "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope."
Its blooper reel was assembled for cast and crew after shooting ended, the tech site said.
The highlights of the reel – as narrated by Mashable – included:
- Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, eats his headset mic after bungling the line, "Great shot kid, that was one in a million" after Luke Skywalker blows up the Death Star.
- Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, speaks the line "Let's get some distance before that thing goes supernova," then pauses to ask George Lucas how he should pronounce "supernova."
- Stormtroopers blow open a door on the Death Star, but a piece of the set about three feet high remains. The stormtroopers try to hop over the board but tumble to the other side "as if emerging from a clown car."
- Alec Guinness, who plays Obi Wan, was accidentally whacked in the face by Chewbacca's arm in the Millennium Falcon. Guinness boggles his eyes and make faces at the camera.
- Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin, flubs his line where he insists Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) "name the target" for the Death Star.
- Anthony Daniels, who plays the android C3PO, struggles to get to the top of a sand dune on Tatooine - and falls over at the top.
- An alien in the Mos Eisley Cantina jabs his middle finger into another alien's chest until the digit bends back on itself. The alien looks at the hand in horror.
