Stan Lee becomes a muscle-bound Masters of the Universe Classics figure
By MICHAEL LOGARTA
There have been many surprising reveals at the San Diego Comic Con 2013 so far, from Play Arts Star Trek figures to life-sized Lego Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles displays. None so far, however, have been as surprising as this.

By the power of Grayskull, Stan Lee becomes Standor, a new figure for the Masters of the Universe Classics action figure line from Mattel.
As can be seen from the photo, Standor bears a striking resemblance to the man himself—if he were thirty years younger and spent as much time in the gym as the other muscle-bound, loin cloth-wearing heroes and freaks of Eternia. Standor also shares Skeletor’s light blue skin, making one wonder if they’re long lost cousins. Or maybe he’s Skeletor’s dad. His black armor—the torso portion of which is an entirely new sculpt—seems to have a disco glitter thing going on.
Upon further consideration, this is probably meant to represent stars and the black backdrop space, consistent with his description as the “Cosmic Creator of Power”—whatever that is.
Standor can also wear a helmet that brings to mind Marvel’s Galactus and his funky-looking headgear.

Aside from Standor, there were plenty of other figures on display at SDCC 2013, as can be seen in these Toy Ark and The Fwoosh archives.
Two-Bad makes a comeback, more dangerous than ever. Glimmer, a friend to She-Ra, also makes an appearance, looking very innocent and pretty in purple and blue.
An extremely pleasant surprise, however, comes in the form of Lord Dactys: a gorgeously detailed, anthropomorphic bat who turned up briefly in the failed 2002 Masters of the Universe animated show.
A classic collectors’ line with plenty of surprises
Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics (MOTUC) line started in August of 2008 with the release of King Grayskull. MOTUC is Mattel’s love letter to fans, by bringing them action figures based on the old 80s designs, but updated using modern sculpting techniques.
The immensely talented Four Horsemen are the masters behind the sculpts, which have become popular enough to warrant the release of over a hundred figures to date, including old favorites such as He-Man, Skeletor, and their variants; weapon packs and vehicles, including mounts such as Battle Cat and Panthor; and characters that are unique to the mini-comics, 2002 animated show, and a variety of other sources.
Now Mattel will be releasing figures of characters that were made exclusively for the classic Filmation cartoons, such as the pirate, Sea Hawk, and Plundor the Spoiler—a pink, humanoid rabbit with a mean streak.
Standor is as unique as he is gimmicky, a figure obviously meant to inject some goofy humor into the line. This is not the first time Mattel has made a move like this; back in July 2010, a special 2-pack, based on a Robot Chicken skit, was released.
