Samsung to release 12in tablet?
Ready for a 12-inch tablet? Korea-based Samsung is now working on such a device, a Korean news site reported over the weekend.
The Korea Economic Daily cited industry sources who said the slate, once completed, would offer the biggest screen size among Samsung's current tablets.
"Although it is not known yet when it will be released, the industry expects the 12-inch tablet PC to be released within October 2013," the report said.
So far, the screen size of Samsung's present range tops out at 11.6 inches.
On the other hand, the report said the 12-inch tablet may use Samsung Display’s LCD panel, and have a "higher than full HD resolution."
"Accordingly, if Samsung Electronics releases a 12 inch model, it would have a compact tablet PC lineup ranging from 7 inch to 12 inch models," it added.
The report cited figures from market research firm IDC showing Samsung sold 8.1 million tablet PCs in the second quarter of 2013.
This is 2.1 million units higher than the same period last year.
Samsung's market share has also risen to 18.9 percent worldwide, a 2.5-fold jump year on year, the Korean Economic Daily added.
A separate report on tech site CNET said this could break away from a trend of making smaller tablets.
It noted Toshiba had announced last June a 13.3-inch Android tablet, while Apple is also reportedly considering larger tablets.
"Needless to say, if both Samsung and Apple come out with larger tablets, others will follow suit," it said. — TJD, GMA News
