Skype to be baked into Windows 8.1

Skype, the Microsoft-acquired videoconferencing service, will be built right into Windows 8.1, the upcoming version of Microsoft's flagship operating system.

In a blog post, Skype's Aga Guzik said Skype will even be featured "front-and-center" on the Start Screen, the first time a user turns on the PC.

"We're thrilled to announce that Skype will join the other powerful offerings of apps and services built-into the Windows 8.1 platform. This is fantastic news for both Skype and Windows users. Now you don’t have to download your favorite app to stay in touch whenever you're apart," Guzik said.

Guzik added that with Windows 8.1, one needs to "simply log in and you’re ready to go."

Even better, Windows 8.1 users can have an easier time reaching more than 300 million Skype users across different devices, especially those with a Windows 8.1 PC.

"As the default communications experience in Windows 8.1, we will continue to focus on delivering the best communications experience for Windows users through Skype," Guzik said.

A separate report on The Next Web said Microsoft may hope to ride on Skype's popularity to push Windows 8.1.

"Given the global popularity of Skype, it's perhaps not that surprising that Microsoft would seek to make the VoIP service the 'default communications experience on Windows 8.1,' as the company put it," it said. — VC, GMA News
