WordPress rolls out 'self-updating' version 3.7

Bloggers using WordPress may benefit from greater security with the latest version of the platform, which now has a silent auto-update feature.

In a blog post, WordPress' Matt Mullenweg said WordPress 3.7, codenamed “Basie” in honor of pianist William James "Count" Basie, applies updates in the background.

"With WordPress 3.7, you don’t have to lift a finger to apply maintenance and security updates. Most sites are now able to automatically apply these updates in the background. The update process also has been made even more reliable and secure, with dozens of new checks and safeguards," he said.

He also said the new WordPress features stronger password recommendations and can recognize "common mistakes" that can lead to weak passwords.

Such "mistakes" may include dates, names, keyboard patterns (123456789), and even pop culture references, he said.

Mullenweg also said localized versions of WordPress will now get faster and more complete translations, and can automatically install and update the right language files.

Meanwhile, Mullenweg said 3.7 is the first WordPress release using the new plugin-first development process, even as 3.8 is due in December. — LBG, GMA News
