Skullgirls to be pulled from PSN, XBox Live after Konami-Lab Zero fallout

Fighting game fans who love or who have yet to experience Lab Zero’s feisty all-female brawler title “Skull Girls” may be in for some shocking news this month, as it appears the game may be pulled from the Playstation Network and XBox Live Arcade sometime this month after the company’s partnership with Konami dissolved.

According to a post at the forums page of the official Skullgirls website and corroborated by a livestream announcement by design director Mike Zaimont, Konami has asked for “Skullgirls” to be de-listed from PSN and XBLA on December 17 and 31 respectively. The takedown notice was only discovered after a representative from Sony called the studio informing that the decision was final without them knowing it. As a result, the company is working around the clock to release the game again with beta changes for the console versions with new publishers. North America and Europe will see it released by Autumn Games for the Playstation Network and Marvelous AQL for Xbox Live Arcade, while CyberFront handles publishing duties for PSN users in Japan.

While the Steam version of Skullgirls remains relatively unaffected, this new development means that a new build with a renewed list of trophies and achievements must be made, to reflect the change in publisher and following Konami’s delisting order. Lab Zero has stated that those who currently own the game for PS3 and Xbox 360 may or may not experience some issues after the change, and upcoming patches will seek to address and fix any problems that are present.

Released in early 2012, Skullgirls is a fighting game that plays much like Capcom’s “Marvel Vs Capcom” series of games, and has a tag team style setup and gameplay akin to those classic brawler titles. The game follows the exploits of various females in the fictional world of the Canopy Kingdom, who all seek to acquire the “Skull Heart” - an item that has the ability to grant any woman’s wish. However, if an individual is impure of heart, the user is turned into a “Skullgirl” – a being of overwhelming power bent on destroying the world.  The current owner of the Skull Heart is a girl named Marie, who acts as the final boss that the players confront with most characters of the game.

Skullgirls is currently available for the Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Microsoft Windows platforms, with a Linux and Arcade version in the works and coming soon as well. — TJD, GMA News
