The Last of Us, GTA V conquer Spike TV’s video game awards show, VGX 2013
Outstanding video game hits, including GTA V, The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite, and Super Mario 3D World, all bagged some pretty hefty awards at this year’s VGX, Spike TV’s annual computer and video game awards show.
The coveted overall Game of the Year award went to Rockstar’s three-man crime-fest, Grand Theft Auto V, otherwise known as GTA V. With its vast library of 240 licensed songs, GTA V also won Best Soundtrack.
On the other hand, Naughty Dog’s seminal PS3 exclusive, The Last of Us, won Best PlayStation Game, Best Voice Actor for Troy Baker as Joel, and Best Voice Actress for Ashley Johnson as Ellie. Naughty Dog itself secured the Studio of the Year award.
BioShock Infinite won Best Shooter, Character of the Year for the Lutece Twins, and Best Song in a Game for “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”
DC fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us, grabbed the Best Fighting Game award. Studio Ghibli’s first foray into epic JRPGs, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, won Best RPG. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag scored Best Action/Adventure.
Casual gamers get to share in the glory, too. Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS scooped up the Best Casual Game award, while Best Mobile Game went to Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time.
Other notable winners include Gone Home, which garnered both Best PC Game and Best Indie Game; Super Mario 3D World, which collected the Best Nintendo Game prize; Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, winner of Best Xbox Game; and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which received the Best Handheld Game award.
The “Spike Video Game Awards” or “VGAs” was a special event that recognized the greatest video and computer games of each year. The very first event was held on December 2, 2003. On November 15, 2013, the VGAs was rebranded and given a new title: VGX. December 7 of this year saw the very first video game awards show under the new VGX format.
Aside from the awards, VGX 2013 also had plenty of exciting reveals, including Telltale’s Game of Thrones game, a new trailer for Eidos Montreal’s Thief reboot, and the Tomb Raider reboot’s re-release on next-gen consoles. — TJD, GMA News
