Han Solo's blaster sold for $200k in online auction
It may have cost just a few credits a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. But in 21st century Earth, Han Solo's iconic blaster will still fetch a price of about $200,000.
That was the price the blaster, which was used in the two of the "Star Wars" films, fetched at an online auction last weekend, tech site Mashable reported Tuesday.
"The battered film prop, like many from Star Wars, is based on a World War II original. In this case, the inspiration was a German Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistol without the shoulder stock," Mashable said.
Invaluable.com said the non-firing blaster was created for “The Empire Strikes Back” and was also used in “Return of the Jedi”. The blaster would have been used in the majority of scenes that feature Han, with the heavier, live-fire weapon being used for close-up shots, it added.
"Particularly noteworthy scenes requiring this lighter version are when Darth Vader uses the Force to lasso the blaster out of Han’s hand in Empire, and in Jedi when Han wrestles with a Stormtrooper to regain possession of his blaster during the Rebels’ encounter with Imperial forces on Endor," Invaluable.com said.
Also, the blaster was based on the original hero prop from the first movie, "Star Wars: A New Hope", and exhibits the same serial number as the hero prop, "which is thought to no longer exist."
"The blaster is exactly in its original filming condition and therefore exhibits wear from use, but retains all of the original details, including the flash suppressor and scope (the eye-piece of which is detailed with reflective scotch-lite tape)," the online auction site added.
"To our knowledge this is the only known example of this type of blaster in private hands. This is a truly incredible item of motion picture history and quite possibly the most exciting science fiction weapon to have been offered for public auction."
Mashable, however, pointed out that the blaster sold on the low end of its estimate.
"But given that the company sold some of those 'ancient weapons' Han Solo was talking about — the lightsaber props used in the film — back in 2005 for a mere $60,000 apiece, that's some serious Star Wars inflation," said Mashable. — DVM/TJD, GMA News
