Network outages hit Valve's Steam service
Network outages hit Valve's Steam gaming platform over the weekend, with a supposed hacker group claiming responsibility for the incident, a video game-oriented site reported late Friday.
A report by ComputerandVideoGames.com said the attack hampered the Steam client and Steam Store, rendering the service "not reliably available."
"One Twitter user, going by the online handle 'chFtheCat' claims to be part of a group that targeted Steam's servers. This has not been verified," it said.
But as of Friday noon Eastern time, PC World said Steam "appears to be working fine."
ComputerandVideoGames.com said Valve's Steam client serves more than 65 million customers.
It added the attack may have been a distributed denial of service (DDoS).
The report added the outages followed a separate suspected DDoS attack on EA's PC games service Origin, and outages to Blizzard's Battle.net and League of Legends online infrastructure.
A separate report on PC World said the outage came on the last day of Steam’s holiday sale that began on December 19. The sale ended Friday. — KDM, GMA News
