Windows 8.1 surpasses Vista in market share

Windows 8.1, the latest version of Microsoft's flagship operating system, now has more market share than Vista, one of the most criticized versions of Windows.

Data from analytics site NetMarketshare.com for January 2014 showed Windows 8.1, which was released October 2013, getting 3.95 percent compared to 3.3 percent for Vista.

The data also showed Windows 8 getting 6.63 percent market share, still below the soon-to-be-13-year-old Windows XP's share of 29.23 percent.

On the other hand, Windows 7 commands nearly half the desktop OS market with 47.49 percent.

Apple's Mac OS X has only 3.2 percent, Linux 1.6 percent and other OSes 4.59 percent, the figures showed.

The Next Web noted the data shows Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 "barely made progress in January 2014," gaining a combined 0.09 percentage points from 10.49 to 10.58 percent.

"More specifically, Windows 8 fell 0.26 percentage points (from 6.89 percent to 6.63 percent), while Windows 8.1 gained 0.35 percentage points (from 3.60 percent to 3.95 percent)," it said.

It added Windows Vista fell 0.31 percentage points from 3.61 percent to 3.30 percent.
