Mattel celebrates Kenner-‘Super Powers’ anniversary with new toyline
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 30 years since Kenner Products released their now legendary “Super Powers Collection” of toy products based on the characters of DC Comics. Alongside their popular Star Wars and The Real Ghostbusters toy-lines at the time, Kenner made figures and playsets based of popular superhero characters such as Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and the Flash. These toys being pose-able, with hidden mechanisms that could be activated by squeezing the legs or arms.Tthe character’s “super power” were thus emphasized, hence the series name “The Super Powers Collection”. Flash forward 30 years and Mattel has the popular DC Universe Classics line of action figures which does pay tribute to the original Super Powers Collection. However, to commemorate the toy-line’s 30th anniversary, Mattel will release a new wave of toys patterned after the original Kenner series. During last February's New York Toy Fair, Mattel's prototype versions of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were showcased, sporting the familiar colors and classic packaging of the old school Kenner toy series. The prototypes were the tried and proven 6” figures with more than 20 points of articulation, a design popular with toy collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. The line has no release date yet, but is expected to come sometime later 2014.
