Second ‘Batman 75’ short film sees ‘Batman Beyond’ take on Batman

After presenting the first animated short “Batman: Strange Days” produced by legendary Batman: The Animated Series creator Bruce Timm for the Caped Crusader’s 75th anniversary, DC Entertainment is about to turn things up a notch by having the Batman of the Future face the original Caped Crusader!

Running a sneak peek via DC All Access of their second DC Nation animated short that’s set to debut during this year’s Wonder Con, DC Comics prepares to bring back Terry McGinnis, aka Batman Beyond, in a new feature by legendary artist Darwyn Cooke that sees The Tomorrow Knight protecting his aged mentor Bruce Wayne and facing… Batman? Rather, it looks like a Batman robot gone rogue, and the clip shows how it would look if the original Dark Knight in his prime faced his futuristic counterpart, where both skill and methodology heavily contrast with one another.

Batman Beyond began in January 1999 and is set in the same universe as Batman: The Animated Series and the DC Animated Universe by extension. Set primarily in 2039 where Gotham City (now Neo-Gotham) is still plagued by crime and corruption, an old and reclusive Bruce Wayne has long retired from crimefighting, putting the cape and cowl of Batman behind him and shutting down the Batcave for over two decades. When a young and rebellious high school student named Terry McGinnis discovers Wayne’s secret, Bruce is suddenly confronted with the responsibility of safeguarding Gotham once more, especially after Terry steals the Batsuit and avenges his father’s death by bringing his killers to justice. As a result, Bruce makes Terry his would-be successor, training the boy and guiding him in his adventures as the Batman of the future.

While initially met with mixed reactions, Batman Beyond soon generated its own following and was eventually warmed up to by Batman fans. The show would gain notoriety and extend beyond TV, even producing its own animated feature film that saw Mark Hamill return to his critically acclaim role as The Joker with “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker”. The character of Terry McGinnis was also eventually introduced into main DC Comics continuity, and the character of Batman Beyond remains a staple in different forms of media produced by DC Entertainment.
