Gmail app for Android hits 1 billion installations mark

Google's Gmail app for Android has been installed more than one billion times, one of the Internet giant's senior officials said Friday.

In a post in his Google+ account, Google senior vice president Sunday Pichai said the Gmail app "just crossed one billion installs."

"Great to see the Gmail App on Android just crossed 1 Billion installs!!" he said.

The Google Play page for the Gmail app indicated it had "one to five billion installs."

However, it is not clear if the Gmail Android app will get a facelift.

A report on Mashable noted screenshots of a new web interface for Gmail had been leaked online earlier this week.

"The Gmail app for Android will likely get a similar treatment as well," it noted. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
