Bottle caps have indeed come a long way since Sesame Street's resident yellow muppet Bert framed them for display.

More than 40 years after Bert first showed the world his beloved collection, a new breed of bottle caps now serves purposes other than just helping keep a liquids fresh.

Gadgetize with '2ndLives'

The 16 new caps are part of beverage giant Coca-Cola's "2ndLives" line, as part of its global sustainability program:

Such caps can be screwed onto Coca-Cola bottles so the bottles can remain useful after their contents are consumed.

Among the potential uses of the bottles with the caps are as a paintbrush, water squirter, and pencil sharpener.

Coming to the Philippines?

A separate article on Gizmodo said that while this is not likely to hurt Coke's market sales, its competitors "would have an uphill battle trying to compete with that added value."

Coca-Cola said it plans to initially give away 40,000 of the caps in Vietnam, then roll them out across Asia.

There's no word yet when they will arrive in the Philippines.
