Google's always-on Android assistant is codenamed 'KITT'
With its always-on listening system, Google could be bringing cars much closer to KITT, the supercomputer on wheels that responds to Michael Knight's voice commands in the 1980s hit show "Knight Rider."
Enthusiast site 9to5google.com cited a report from AndroidPolice indicating Google is looking to expand the capabilities of its “Ok, Google” functionality further.
"Internally, Google is referring to this feature set as KITT and 'Android Eyes Free.' KITT will allow for users to activate Google Now when their device is turned off, as long as it is plugged into a power source," it said.
But for now, it said users would need to use a Bluetooth headset or speakerphone. It added a user can wave a hand over the device to wake it up.
However, it added there is a chance Google could work on battery optimization that will allow the functionality to work even if it is not always connected to a power source.
Such a functionality potentially allows a motorist to say “Ok, Google” and activate Google Now even if the device is turned off, 9to5google said.
"Google will supposedly strongly be marketing this feature as useful for in the car. This new always on feature will be able to walk users through performing common tasks, such as sending a text or making call," 9to5google said.
It added Google Now may be able to read back entire cards, for answering questions like “what’s the weather?” — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
