Coming soon: Mortal Kombat X
By TIM G. VILLASOR

It’s time once again for gods, monsters, and men to do battle for the fate of our planet and realms beyond our world, as one of the most well-known fighting game franchises in North America prepares to count to its tenth installment and unleash new and bizarre ways for players to decimate each other and their opponents.
Announced in his own Twitter account, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has officially unveiled to the world the very first announcement trailer for “Mortal Kombat X” – the series’ next installment since the epic and highly successful rebirth of the franchise with “Mortal Kombat” or MK9 released in 2011 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation Vita, and PC.
That game not only brought the game back to its two-dimensional fighting game roots, while incorporating some new elements such as a “Super Meter” and the “X-Ray Move”, which gives every fighter a unique and highly damaging “bone breaking attack” with devastating consequences.

Just ahead and in time for the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, the brand new trailer for MK X showcases the continuing struggle of Earthrealm to battle the forces of evil and the numerous kombatants looking to resolve their personal dilemmas and conflicts during the Mortal Kombat tournament.
Chief among these rivalries are the series flagship characters “Scorpion” and “Sub-Zero”, two ninjas hailing from rival factions who have bore hatred for one another after the former was killed by the latter and then resurrected as an undead spectre. The announcement trailer shows what fans of the MK series can expect from the next installment of the series using next-generation technology, as well as a possible outcome for the fighters present when they finally resolve their eternal dispute once and for all.

Developed and published then by the now defunct Midway Games, the original Mortal Kombat was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, who were originally tapped to create a video game much like the film Bloodsport and starring martial arts action star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
When the license to use JCVD and the movie fell through, Boon and Tobias continued on with creating a game, and the end result was one of the most violent and brutal fighting games in video game history.
Distancing itself from its competition with the Capcom-made Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat incorporated blood and finishing moves, which had players humiliating their opponents by actually killing their defeated characters with a Fatality. The game was released in 1992 and became a critical and controversial success, and was the sole reason why the Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB game rating system in America was created.

After seeing success in Arcades, Mortal Kombat eventually found its way to home consoles. As a result of the controversy in the 90’s, the violent content and fatalities was changed and censored, but still unlockable in certain versions by inputting a special code. Sequels were inevitable, and since then 8 installments were released through the various gaming generations that saw the franchise evolve from one point to the next.
Mortal Kombat also saw success in other forms of media, with a movie franchise and TV Series made as well as comic books and action figures. Even after the dissolution of Midway Studios in 2009, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment bought the rights to the franchise.
Eventually NetherRealm Studios was created with original creator Ed Boon spearheading the group, leading to the creation of not only MK9, but the highly successful superhero fighting game “Injustice: Gods Among Us”, featuring popular characters from the DC Universe such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman and hailing from Warner Bros. own DC Comics label.

No exact release date has been given for Mortal Kombat X save for “sometime in 2015”, according to Kotaku.com, but expect an announcement soon with E3 and the other video game events on the horizon. — TJD, GMA News
