Catch Batgirl's spiffy new costume and creative team this October

It’s been about three years since DC Entertainment changed things up and relaunched their DC universe with “The New 52”, rebooting over 70 years of comic book history and introducing new stories aimed to attract a younger and new generation of readers. While some characters like Batman and Green Lantern retain some story elements from their respective histories, most heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman have stared from scratch, and have even established new status quos and relationships that were previously unthinkable actions until now.

Come this October, another wave of change will be happening to some characters for The New 52, and one particular individual getting a big shake up is Barbara Gordon, otherwise known as the female counterpart to the Dark Knight – Batgirl.

According to a report on MTV News, longtime writer of the series Gail Simone is set to leave the title, with a new creative team entering the picture and introducing some dynamic new changes to the former Oracle and daughter of Commissioner Gordon.

Led by the duo writing team of Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher and art duties going to illustrator Babs Tarr, Batgirl is set to go off on a new direction, with Barbara’s adventures focusing on a lighter tone and putting her in Graduate School. The new gig also comes with some new threads for the crimefighter, as Tarr and Fletcher have designed a brand new costume for the girl wonder, which does away with the spandex and combines elements of leather and matte, weaving together an outfit that’s heavily grounded on existing elements and without looking too flashy.

In many ways this new change for Batgirl is a welcome one, especially after all the problems and turmoil her life has gone through thanks to fighting crime with the darkness as her ally. After being shot by The Joker, getting paralyzed and working as Oracle, recovering and returning to crimefighting as Batgirl, and facing family problems with her brother being a serial killer and her dad getting imprisoned, this is the break Barbara needs, and the new creative team with Simone’s blessing seek to give her the joy and adventure that has been missing for quite some time. It’s a refreshing new experience that not only sounds exciting, but has also gotten positive feedback from fans and readers who have openly embraced this change after news and pictures of her new costume and direction hit the internet.
