Steam now accepts payment in Pesos

For most people who live outside of the United States, paying for anything online in denominations of the almighty American dollar can be pretty daunting. That's changing for Steam, the world's most popular online game distribution and retail service.

According to an e-mail sent out to all Steam users from the Philippines, the Philippine peso will be added to its list of supported currencies. That means games listed and sold will be priced in the Philippine peso, "at a conversion rate dictated by market value at the time of conversion." Additionally, any money currently being held in a user's Steam wallet will be converted appropriately on September 16th, 2014.

This development reflects plans revealed by Valve Software, the company that owns and operates the Steam service, earlier this year at Steam Dev Days, a two day developer's conference held in Seattle. According to a slide released by Steam Database, the company has plans to expand native currency support. Judging by the e-mail, it doesn't appear that Steam intends to make any dramatic changes to its pricing. Regardless of these changes, Philippine users will continue to use any number of payment options such as MOL Points, PayPal and Steam Wallet pre-paid codes in addition to credit cards to buy games. Supporting additional currencies simply means that Valve has chosen to make purchasing decisions easier to make for its growing international user base.  — TJD, GMA News
