You can now edit MS Office files in Google Drive

You can now edit Microsoft Office files straight - and more easily - out of Google Drive, after Google rolled out updates to its cloud storage service.

In a Google+ post, Google said this is particularly useful for users who encounter Office files as attachments in their email.

"With just one click on the new edit icon in Gmail attachments, you can automatically convert Office documents - giving you the additional benefits of a single document to keep track of, access from anywhere (even offline!), and revision history," it said.

It also said users can now import 15 new Office formats including presentation show files (pps, ppsx), macro-enabled files, and template files, with improved support for charts, images, and tables.

Also, Google rolled out an extension for its Chrome browser that allows one to open and edit an Office file without converting it to Google formats.

"Once it’s in place, you’ll have the option to convert the file by clicking on the pencil icon, or edit the file as is by clicking on the attachment card and selecting open from the top of the file preview," it said.

Before, The Next Web said a user had to save a file first to Google Drive if he or she wanted to keep making changes to it.

"These are small but useful changes as Google tries make its products more competitive with Office for power-users," it said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
