Apple patents smart stylus that you can use anywhere

The stylus could be back in style, with iPhones and iPads sporting such accessories, but with a twist: these are smart styluses that can recognize your handwriting.

Apple patented just such an accessory, which it described as a stylus for writing on any type of surface, capable of wirelessly transmitting images or text to a remote digital computing device.

It said the stylus may be "for writing on any type of surface, such as a piece of paper or a whiteboard and subsequently displaying the written images or text on a display of a digital computing device."

A separate article on AppleInsider said the stylus could be programmed to transmit movement data after a certain amount is collected, at predefined intervals or continuously.

It could also send stylus data to multiple devices, "perhaps as meeting notes."

"It should be noted that Apple's invention can be fitted with multiple accelerometers to measure movement in three dimensions, thus producing an accurate digital copy of stylus motion at any angle, whether it be on a desk, wall or in the air," AppleInsider said.

But the site also said the chance of one such stylus actually being produced is slim because of the major efforts put into a multitouch interface.

"Indeed, most of the hardware mentioned in the patent are already being used in current-generation iPhones and iPads," it added. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
