Bing officially part of Twitter’s translation tool

Now, it's official – Microsoft's Bing is part of Twitter's translation mechanism, a tech site reported Saturday.

A report on tech site Mashable said the translation feature is being used in the microblogging service's web and mobile apps.

"Earlier this month, Twitter told Mashable that the tool was only being tested when it appeared last summer during the World Cup; that's why it was no longer available when the tournament ended. The translation feature had already returned to TweetDeck earlier this month," it said.

It added Twitter has been experimenting with the translation tool, which can provide translations between more than 40 language pairs, for some time.

Bing's translation is also part of Twitter's website, and also works on iOS, Android and TweetDeck.

To use the tool, users can click on a tweet. They will then see a small globe-like icon that when clicked or tapped will have Bing translate the tweet.

But Mashable also noted the translator is occasionally "prone to mistakes," so it's "best to factor in a margin of error with each translation."

"Although Bing Translator relies on advanced translation software to provide Tweet translations, the results still vary and often fall below the accuracy and fluency of translations provided by a professional translator," Twitter said. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
