‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ arrives in September

The wait is finally over. Metal Gear creator and Kojima Productions leader Hideo Kojima finally announced the big one that fans have been waiting for, and that is the worldwide release date for his next chapter in the long-running Metal Gear Solid franchise with “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain”.

Still here? Then be prepared because the game will officially be out for the Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on September 1, 2015, and on PC on September 15.

Kojima took to IGN to make the special announcement, and also shared his thoughts about the gameplay, development process, and why he considers this to be the “last Metal Gear game ever” that he’ll be making after repeatedly saying the same for past installments years ago.

“I’ve always said ‘this will be my last Metal Gear’, but the games in the series that I’ve personally designed and produced – Metal Gear on MSX, MG2, MGS 1,2,3,4, Peace Walker, and now MGS V – are what constitute a single ‘Metal Gear Saga’. With MGSV, I’m finally closing the loop on that saga.”

“In that sense, this will be the final ‘Metal Gear Solid,’ Kojima continued. “Even if the ‘Metal Gear’ franchise continues, this will be the last “Metal Gear”.

In addition to a standard release for the console versions, IGN has also listed details for a “Day One” and “Collector’s Edition” for The Phantom Pain. Both formats include a physical map and extra DLC content for both formats, while the Collector’s Edition contains a load of extra collectible goodies, including a replica of Venom Snake’s arm and a special “Diamond Dogs” case.

Taking place nine years after the events of the prologue entry Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain sees Snake/ Big Boss waking up from a coma and finding everything he built destroyed and in disarray. Determined to find those responsible and seek revenge, he takes up the codename “Venom Snake” and builds a new mercenary group called the “Diamond Dogs”, reestablishing ties with his longtime ally Kazuhira Miller and old rival Ocelot. Snake and his allies’ mission for vengeance is interrupted however, as a new threat to the world from the Cipher organization seeks to develop a weapon that has the potential to surpass “Metal Gear”. — TJD, GMA News
