Finally, new MacBook allows non-apple chargers

One of the most welcome changes in Apple's new 12-inch MacBook laptop may well be the one not mentioned by the tech darling.

The new MacBook will finally allow MacBook battery packs and third-party chargers via its new USB-C port, enthusiast site 9to5mac.com quoted its sources as saying.

Such a change means freedom from Apple's proprietary MagSafe chargers. Earlier MacBooks would not charge without the MagSafe chargers.

"(M)ost accessories supporting the USB Type-C specifications should work with your new MacBook. Apple won’t be doing anything to block any specific types of accessories— in fact, it will even allow external batteries or other Macs (!!) to charge the new MacBoo," it said.

"Sources say that any battery solution that meets the USB Power Delivery specifications should work with the new MacBook, though the battery will need to push enough power to actually recharge a laptop. Apple has its own 29W power adapter that will come with the new MacBook," it added.

The USB-C port on the new MacBook replaces all other power and data ports in earlier MacBooks.

On the other hand, 9to5mac said MacBook users can connect a USB-C multiport adapter to handle whatever accessories they want, including 4k displays.

Big deal

The 9to5mac report said this could be a big deal since Apple had not let companies build accessories with MagSafe, suing companies that tried to do so.

"With USB-C, battery packs for MacBook should start to more closely mirror the market for iOS device batteries. Many low-cost and compact designs should require nothing more than the standard USB C charge cable that comes with the new MacBook or an inexpensive USB A to USB C cable," it said.

It added the USB Type-C will finally allow convenient charging of MacBooks and via a wider range of third-party accessories. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
