WATCH: Classic videogame characters turn alien invaders in ‘Pixels’
By MATTHEW ARCILLA
The first trailer for ‘Pixels’ was released today by Sony Pictures. The video game themed adventure-comedy stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad. The trailer features Pac-Man eating a fire truck, Donkey Kong dropping barrels on The President and Peter Dinklage in a mullet, among other things.
‘Pixels’ is directed by Chris Columbus (I Love You Beth Cooper, Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief) and is based on the premise of a NASA time capsule containing images and footage of human culture being found by aliens. Unfortunately, the aliens misinterpret the video of classic arcade games as a declaration of war and they launch an invasion on Earth using the games as the basis for their attacks.
Sandler plays a former 1980s video game champion who is called upon by the President of the United States (Kevin James) to lead a team of arcade veterans (Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Michelle Monaghan plays a weapons specialist for the military who helps design gear that can destroy the pixelated terrors.
‘Pixels’ is based on a two minute short written and directed by Patrick Jean in 2010 and won the Cristal award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It can be viewed free of charge on YouTube. — TJD, GMA News
