This year’s Mother’s Day Google doodle pays tribute to moms of all shapes, sizes –and species

Google on Sunday paid tribute to mothers "of all shapes, sizes and species" with an animated doodle to mark Mothers' Day.

Visitors to Google's home page (www.google.com) were greeted with an animation of several kinds of mothers - human or animal - protecting their children.

"Happy Mother’s Day to mothers of all shapes, sizes, and species! Today’s Doodle represents the universality of familial love. I had a few separate concepts, some with animals, some with people, and looking at them all, I thought it would be fun to try to tie them together," doodler Olivia Huynh said.

Huynh said she thought of her own mother, and focused on "small moments and gestures of affection" as a concept.

She also spent quite some time thinking how to keep the characters "somewhat minimalistic and relatable since Mother’s Day is celebrated all around [the] world."

The final product uses a watercolor texture to give "a more human hand," she added.

"Thank you, moms, for bearing us, and bearing with us, every step of the way," she said.

Meanwhile, needless to say, clicking on the doodle will bring the visitor to a Search Results page for Mother's Day – including the original Mother's Day message on Time.com.

Mother's Day started in the early 1900s when Philadelphia activist Anna Jarvis paid tribute to her mother on May 10, 1908.
