Disney Infinity 3.0 makes Star Wars part of your toy box world
By MATTHEW ARCILLA
It's official. Disney Interactive has announced the introduction of Star Wars characters to the Disney Infinity series.
The company stated in a press release that Star Wars will be "joining forces" with Disney, Pixar and Marvel in Disney Infinity 3.0, the latest installment in the best-selling "hybrid toy / videogame." Launched in 2013, the Disney Infinity series mashes together the different worlds and characters owned by Disney and its subsidiary companies.
Players collect a variety of stylized figurines such as The Lone Ranger and Lightning McQueen as well as characters from their 'princess' films like Rapunzel and Jasmine. Disney Infinity draws inspiration from Activision's successful Skylanders. It's widely recognized that Nintendo's amiibo line of figures draws inspiration from these games.
The announcement for Disney Infinity 3.0 comes just a couple of weeks after a German retailer published listings for the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack, which includes figures for Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker modeled after their appearances in the Star Wars Clone Wars animated series.
“Star Wars is a cross-generational franchise, and Disney Infinity 3.0 creates an incredible opportunity for families and fans to relive their favourite Star Wars moments,” said John Blackburn, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Infinity. “With the addition of Star Wars, Inside Out and new Disney and Marvel characters, Disney Infinity 3.0 will be the most ambitious and diverse offering yet and also the most accessible.”
The first Disney Infinity 3.0 products will be available this August. The Starter Pack will be retail at $64.99 and ship with three Play Sets: one set in the timeline of the prequels, the second set during the original trilogy, and the third based on Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™ and its upcoming sequels. Various studios will be supervised by Avalanche Software to create these.
The Star Wars™: Twilight of the Republic Play Set takes place in the height of the Jedi’s powers, where players will use the Force™ and Lightsabers™ in epic battles and master their combat skills alongside Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Darth Maul. It is being developed by Ninja Theory, the studio behind DmC: Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword.
The Star Wars™: Rise Against the Empire Play Set will take players on galaxy-spanning missions with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader, piloting X-wing fighters or the Millennium Falcon to fight stormtroopers, or exploring and partaking in land-based missions on planets like Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor. It is being developed by Studio Gobo, which produced the Pirates of the Caribbean Play Set.
Additonal Play Sets will continue to offer "distinct gameplay and environments." A Play Set featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man, Ultron, and other Marvel characters is being developed by United Front Games, creators of Sleeping Dogs. The Toy Box will receive an enhancement in the form of two new multiplayer modes: Toy Box Speedway (kart racing) and Toy Box Takeover (action-adventure.) New figures teased include Mickey and Minnie, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, and Mulan and Olaf.
Disney Infinity 3.0 will also introduce an all-new, 3-D Toy Box Hub that will make it easier to choose from the increasingly wider selection of gameplay experiences where kids and families can play with popular Disney, Disney•Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters together in a structured setting.
“Disney Infinity is the only game where fans can play with Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters together in one experience,” said James Pitaro, President, Disney Interactive. “We worked closely with Lucasfilm to deliver an authentic Star Wars game experience, featuring some of the most iconic stories and characters from the past, present and future.”
Disney Infinity 3.0 will ship on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android. — TJD, GMA News
