Google set to make Android-powered appliances, Internet of Things a reality
Google's jolly green robot could be making its way from phones and tablets to other Internet-connected appliances and gadgets.
The Internet giant is preparing a version of Android for low-powered devices under the Internet of Things category, TheInformation.com reported.
Android IoT
Quoting people briefed about the project, it said the IoT version of Android could run on devices with as little as 32 MB of RAM.
Present versions of Android require at least 512 MB RAM, it noted.
With such a technology for low-powered devices, the Android variant could power appliances from smart fridges and light bulbs to garden monitors, it said.
Codename Brillo
But PC World, commenting on TheInformation's report, added that the operating system will not be codenamed Android but Brillo.
Still, Brillo may retain some type of Android branding since the Android unit is working on it.
"Google is likely hoping to replicate the success of Android, which powers the majority of mobile devices, with the connected home," it added. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
