Google drops emoji in mobile, desktop search results

Google is no longer displaying emojis on its search results pages - on both desktop and mobile.

The drop in support appeared to be implemented over the weekend, ending months of displaying the "fun" characters, SearchEngineLand reported.

Google had said as early as May it would drop emojis from its search results, the site said.

"Again, this should come as no surprise to anyone, as Google has been saying they would be removed for several weeks now," Google also said.

It added this came after some brands like Expedia used "clever" ways to use emojis in search results to boost traffic.

A separate report on The Next Web said pages that use emoji will not be penalized, but Google "just won’t show the symbols when it returns their page in search results."

"Emoji will still show as headers in search when accompanied by text," The Next Web said.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
