Samsung to unblock windows update with software patch

Korean electronics giant Samsung will roll out a software patch for its PCs, to unblock updates from Microsoft for the Windows operating system.

This was after users noted a utility software for Windows PCs made by the company was blocking the automatic update mechanism from Microsoft, PC World reported.

It quoted Samsung as saying the patch will roll out via the Samsung Software Update notification process "to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days.”

Researcher Patrick Barker earlier reported on a downloadable “Disable_Windowsupdate.exe” app that runs on Samsung PCs.

Samsung's controversial app would also run on startup, meaning attempts to re-enable automatic Windows updates will be blocked again once the PC restarts.

The app aims to prevent the default drivers that come with Microsoft's updates from overriding Samsung's proprietary ones.

PC World said a Samsung support representative told Barker the app sought to prevent Windows Update from installing default drivers that could break features like USB 3.0 ports. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
