Here's Samsung's thinnest, lightest tablet yet

Meet Samsung's thinnest and lightest tablet to date: the Galaxy Tab S2.

Samsung on Monday announced the new S2, which it said is optimized for "productivity and mutitasking" and will be available starting August.

"At just 5.6mm thin and only 389 grams (for the 9.7-inch model) and 265 grams (for the 8.0-inch model) weight, the Galaxy Tab S2 is perfectly designed for reading and consuming content due to its stunning Super AMOLED Display," it said.

Samsung said the new tablet will come in 9.7-inch and 8-inch variants.

It added the tablets are particularly well-suited for reading digital content, including e-books, magazines, web pages and news feeds.

The Galaxy Tab S2 also comes preloaded with Microsoft Office Solutions for productivity on the road, such as creating and editing documents.

Users can also store up to 100GB of files on the cloud via Microsoft's OneDrive for two years for free, it said.

Also, the new tablet supports the advanced Book Cover Keyboard that has a built-in trackpad.

Other features of the new tablet include:

- a touch-enabled fingerprint Scanner for hassle-free authentication
- built-in advanced security sensor offering easy access to the personal device with a simple press against the home key
- improved storage structure that makes locating files simpler
- support for Wi-Fi and/or LTE
- 32 or 64GB storage with MicroSD up to 128GB

The tablets run on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and has an 8MP camera (rear) and 2.1MP camera (front).

Sensors include an accelerometer, finger scanner, gyroscope, compass, hall sensor, and RGB sensor.

More powerful processors

A report on The Verge said Samsung may have done away with the larger 10.5-inch variant with the new iPad-sized model.

It added the new Samsung tablet has the same 4:3 screen orientation as the iPad.

But it added the Tab S2 may have addressed the biggest problem with the previous model - a weak processor. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
