‘Far Cry Primal’ unveiled with trailer and game details

Ubisoft has revealed the latest entry in its “Far Cry” series, and this time, players will be taking a trip back to the dawn of humanity.

“Far Cry Primal” takes place in 10,000 B.C., an era “when giant mammoths and sabretooth tigers ruled the Earth, and humanity was at the bottom of the food chain.” You play as Takkar, a “seasoned hunter and the last surviving member of your group.” Your goal? Survive the dangers of an untamed land, and from the hunted rise “to become the apex predator.”

Predators will range from megafauna such as dire-wolves and the aforementioned woolly mammoths, while rival tribes will also be out for your hide. To fend off these threats, you’ll be using primitive yet lethal weapons such as clubs, spears, axes, and bows. You’ll also have the opportunity to ally yourself with other characters, and even grow your own tribe.

“Like any good hunter, Takkar carries an extensive set of survival skills, including the ability to craft tools and weapons from the bones of the beasts he slays and the resources he gathers in the wild,” states Ubisoft in its official blog. “These are not only crucial for his own safety against predators (both human and animal), they’re also essential in maintaining the safety of his tribe. Takkar will need to guard his fledgling group carefully to ensure its survival and growth."

Fire will also play a significant role in the game, as it will allow you to scare away nocturnal predators, and set your weapon aflame.

As with other games in the series, you’ll have a massive open world to conquer. This time, it’s a place known as Oros – a glacial valley teeming with “redwood forests, harsh taiga, and humid swamps…”

“The Stone Age is the perfect setting for a Far Cry game,” said the game’s creative director, Jean-Christophe Guyot. “Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier. The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain. That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself.”

“Far Cry” has become one of Ubisoft’s most lucrative franchises. 2012’s “Far Cry 3” was the recipient of several nominations and awards. While “Far Cry 4” failed to outsell its predecessor, it was also a critical and financial success.

“The ‘Far Cry’ franchise is here for the long-run and is a stronger contender in the shooter genre,” said Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot.

Ubisoft Montreal is collaborating with Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai Studio, and Ubisoft Kiev Studio to develop “Far Cry Primal.” The title is set for global release on February 23, 2016 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A PC version will also be made available the following March. There will be no Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 releases. — TJD, GMA News
