Nintendo announces NES Classic Edition

If you’re a video game fan and have been playing games since the 80’s, chances are you owned a Nintendo Entertainment System—one of the first video game consoles from the company that helped revolutionize the industry. Known as the Family Computer in Japan and Asian Territories and originally released in 1983, the system came to North America repackaged as the NES and set the bar by becoming one of the most memorable and best-selling consoles of all time.

Now,  to celebrate over 30 years of video game greatness and loyalty to its fans, the publisher and developer is going back in time and actually releasing a new version of its most famous 8-bit console. Set for a release date in the US this fall, the NES Classic Edition is a mini-replica of the 1985 juggernaut. It comes pre-packed with 30 classic games from the NES library, including the original Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jr, Castlevania, and The Legend Of Zelda.

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

The NES Classic Edition isn’t just a regular rereleased 8-bit console either, as it comes packaged with other necessities that fit today’s technological standards and needs. The system comes with an HDMI cable for modern television units, as well as an AC adaptor and one NES controller, designed and patterned after the original’s look itself. The system can also support a second controller, which will be released and can be purchased separately at $9.99. Plus, the console has a multiple suspend point system that allows players to save and take a break if the need arises—back then, you couldn’t turn off the system at all and there were no memory cards or hard disks to save you!
