Mehve, the glider from 1984 ‘Nausicaa’ anime movie, now exists in the real world

After 13 years of experiments and two test models, the Mehve glider from "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" classic anime movie is now a reality.

The glider was flown in the 1984 Studio Ghibli movie by the character, Princess Nausicaä.

Japanese artist Kazuhiko Hachiya turned fantasy into a reality as he created a real-life Mehve.

He manned the single seat, jet engine powered glider in front of an awed audience At the Takikawa Skypark in Takikawa, Hokkaido, Japan last week.

A smaller Mehve was introduced in 2003 and Hachiya has been working since then to scale up and create a functioning glider.

The gaming site Kotaku reported that visitors can visit the 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo to see an exhibition for the latest Open Sky glider and see a documentary chronicling Hachiya's project.
