“StarCraft,” the legendary real-time strategy game from Blizzard, may be getting the HD remaster treatment, according to multiple sources.

The report was first made by respected South Korean website iNews24, then picked up and translated by Kotaku.

The HD remaster of “StarCraft” will reportedly make no changes to the original game’s gameplay. However, expect improvements to its graphics resolution and user interface.

As of now, it is unclear if the remaster will cover only the single-player campaign, or if it will also encompass multiplayer and the game’s expansion, “StarCraft: Brood War.” It is also unknown if the game’s 2D sprites and environments will be replaced by 3D models.

According to iNews24, “StarCraft HD” will be officially announced this September, possibly during the closure of the “StarCraft II” World Championship Series in Mexico. After this reveal, Blizzard will then provide more details about the remastered game at BlizzCon in November.

While iNews24—South Korea’s first online newspaper—is a credible source, Blizzard has yet to confirm this news about “StarCraft HD.”

A history of greatness

“StarCraft” is a military science fiction real-time strategy title originally released in 1998. Its official expansion, “StarCraft: Brood War,” is considered by many to be one of the finest games every made. Both the main game and its expansion serve as the predecessors to 2010’s “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty,” which was then followed by sequels “StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm” and “StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.”

“StarCraft” is credited for helping boost the popularity and significance of eSports and the real-time strategy genre. While a success, “StarCraft II” did not have the same impact on the gaming industry as “StarCraft,” mainly due to the rise of the MOBA genre; MOBAs such as “DotA” and “League of Legends” are now the world’s most popular eSports games.

Nevertheless, “StarCraft” remains among the most beloved games in the world, and continues to be one of the most played, especially in South Korea.

As for “StarCraft” developer and publisher Blizzard Entertainment, they’re having a swell year, thanks to the monumental success of their latest IP, “Overwatch.” — BM, GMA News
