Nintendo Switch: The console hybrid we need and deserve?
There’s always been two types of gamers: those who prefer to play traditionally in the comfort of their own home with the console of their choice, and those who like to take things “on the go” and play while travelling to other destinations. It’s a disconnect that has advantages and disadvantages on both ends, with graphics and replay value serving as factors that determine which target market suits a specific gamers needs.
All that is possibly about to change however thanks to Nintendo’s new announcement – a new upcoming console that serves as “the missing link” between console and mobile gaming and it’s fittingly called the “Nintendo Switch”.
Announced and revealed by Nintendo with a trailer that is powerful, bold, and ambitious in nature, Nintendo dares to look beyond the scope of a market divided by two preferential mediums of gaming and instead combine it into something that can do both functions at once.
At first, the once codenamed “NX” platform was all but a piece of hardware that ran with all rumors and speculation that would change the landscape of gaming as we know it.
We have a device that is a mobile tablet that can be docked into a base station that turns it into a console. If you want to take it “on the go”, the tablet can slip out, and the two ends of the Switch’s controller can removed and combined with the portable device to turn it into a handheld device!
The sneak peek pretty much set out towards that goal, and fan reaction has been nothing short of being overwhelmingly positive.
While there hasn’t been any major titles announced for the Switch, the trailer has teased the kind of games we can play and enjoy with the device either at home or on the go. There’s the recently announced new “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” that’s going to get a port for the system, and of course a new Mario game is not far from the horizon.
Several gaming companies have already announced partnerships with Nintendo to develop games for the system, and while nothing has been confirmed as of yet, glimpses of Skyrim and NBA 2K17 in the trailer suggest that ports of these games are being made as well.
The possibilities are endless and the Nintendo Switch is coming. Exciting times are ahead, and we’ll find out what Nintendo’s new baby has in store in the coming months before it gets its worldwide release in March 2017. — TJD, GMA News
