Marvel to give away 'Cosmic Cubes' for Secret Empire tie-in
As the world still reels in disbelief over the actions and betrayal of one of the most recognizable comic book heroes ever, Marvel Comics is gearing fans up for a unique promotional campaign with their current crossover “Secret Empire” – where the House of Ideas will partner with participating comic book shops to give away free “Cosmic Cubes” along with orders of “Secret Empire #6”, which is scheduled to be released in the next few months.
According to Comic Book.com, the cosmic cubes will glow in the dark and will be shipped according to the number of orders placed for issue #6 of Marvel’s current event series – which sees Captain America/ Steve Rogers revealed to be new supreme leader of the evil organization Hydra.
Those who know their comics remember the cosmic cube to be a mystical artifact that has appeared through Marvel history – giving the wielder the ability to make any wish they desire into a reality. In recent events, Captain America’s longtime enemy The Red Skull manipulated a sentient cosmic cube known as “Kobik” to rewrite Steve Rogers’ history – making him a sleeper Hydra agent since his childhood and early days in World War II.
While the change to Captain America’s character and the premise of “Secret Empire” itself have remained controversial thanks to its fascist themed tone, the comic’s zero issue released in April has sold about 160,000 copies.
The storyline has been building up since Steve Rogers was returned to his prime last year and got a brand new ongoing solo title with “Captain America: Steve Rogers” written by Nick Spencer - with the debut issue revealing his new allegiance by uttering the words “Hail Hydra”. Spencer also pens Secret Empire and serves as the culmination event of his year long odyssey to bring a unique interpretation of the Star Spangled Avengers’ history the world never expected.
