Want to get into podcasts? 'We Study Billionaires' podcaster says you must 'focus on one thing and go a 110% on that'

When Danish podcaster Stig Brodersen founded what turned out to be the longest-running business and investing podcast in the world, making money was not his priority.

Brodersen, co-founder and show host of “We Study Billionaires,” by The Investor’s Podcast (TIP) Network, was in the country last August to meet his fans at a casual get-together in a Makati bar.

He encouraged Filipinos who want to make it big in podcasting to focus on creating a good product and quality content for the network more than anything else.

“You need to focus on one thing and make that really, really, really well, and just go a 110% on that. If you're [going to] do minimal viable product on a podcast, no one's going to listen to it unfortunately,” he told GMA News Online.

With so many different things and fields in podcasting that one can explore, Brodersen said, “It was just all about like finding the right next. If you can create a really, really good podcast, you don't need 500 employees working in the factory for you.”

TIP started in 2014, when podcasts were becoming popular. Fast forward to 2019 and podcasting is now a big industry in the US. It's also starting to take off in the Philippines.

“We were just so lucky that when we started in 2014, that was when podcasting really started to grow big. So being the biggest [documented] podcasting, I attribute 90% at least to luck for being there at the right place, at the right time,” Brodersen shared.

“We Study Billionaires,” TIP’s flagship podcast, studies the trials and successes of financial billionaires. It has about 30 million downloads as reported by the network.

Under the TIP network, three additional investing programs were premiered:

  1. “Millenial Investing” by Robert Leonard - studies investing basics for the millenial crowd
  2. “Silicon Valley” by Shawn Flynn - studies the workings of companies in Silicon Valley
  3. “The Good Life” by Sean Murray - upcoming show which studies the human habits In the context of investing

Despite the success, Brodersen revealed they initially did not think about profiting from podcasting. “I know it sounds weird but we had a plan like we cannot make money [for] the first 12 months,” he said.

Adding, “I have the idea that if we just focus on creating a lot of value for people and just building the brand, we'll figure out how to make money along the way.”

One lesser known fact about the successful network is that part of its workforce is stationed in the Philippines.

“I think a lot of stories about outsourcing that's gone wrong in countries like the Philippines is they don't have that one person that they really trust. They might have a company that sells them the service but they don't really have that one person that they really trust, so I'm sorry to say that I think I'm a bit lucky on that one,” Brodersen mentioned.

Building a team that consists the “right people” is what he sees as an important factor for TIP’s growth, and essential for any business’ success.

Brodersen believes, “If you find the right people, if you have a scalable product, you can go really, really, really far, and that's sort of like also what we try to do.”

By staying focused and having the right people, The Investor’s Podcast Network has grown from a small network to a recognizable podcast brand. And with new programs being rolled out, TIP is on its way to reach the tip of the podcasting iceberg. — LA, GMA News
