8-year-old Ryan Kaji is highest paid YouTuber in 2019
Eight-year-old Ryan Kaji, the kid behind YouTube channel Ryan's World, earned $26 million in 2019 (about P1,316,633,815.56), making him the highest paid content creator on the platform, Forbes magazine reports on Wednesday.
Kaji was already YouTube's highest paid creator in 2018, earning $22 million.
Kaji became famous for his "unboxing" videos on YouTube. He opens presents in front of the camera and says his comments on each.
His channel Ryan's World, formerly Ryan Toys Review was launched in 2015 and in a span of three years, it has amassed about 23 million subscribers.
According to a Pew Research Center study titled "A Week in the Life of Popular YouTube Channels" by Patrick Van Kessel Skye Toor and Aaron Smith this year, videos with children in them average almost thrice as many views compared to other types of videos on YouTube.
Meanwhile, in another study titled "Many Turn to YouTube for Children's Content, News, How-To Lessons," Smith, Toor and Kessel said 81 percent of parents with children 11 years old or younger let their children watch YouTube.
Second in the Forbes' list is Dude Perfect ($20 million), a channel run by a group of five in their 30s, playing with adolescent toys such as a giant Nerf ball.
In third place is Russia's Anastasia Radzinskaya, another child star. At the age of 5, she has already earned $18 million.
For Kaji, the YouTube channel was just the beginning. He now has a line of branded toys, clothing and home goods sold at Walmart, Amazon and Target.
Meanwhile, Radzinskaya, who now lives in Florida, will be launching her own line of toys, mobile game and a book next year.
On the other hand, YouTube is now working to limit revenue possibilities for children's channels in response to a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission for allegedly violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act policy. — LA, GMA News
