With tech updates, experts push for responsible use of gadgets

In ten years, technological advancement has been rapid and people have become more adept to the use of mobile gadgets, applications and social media.

The phones from 2009 may be dubbed as the dumb-phones when compared to the 2019 smartphones, a technology expert and editor said in a Tuesday report by JP Soriano on State of the Nation Address with Jessica Soho.

In 2009, popular cellphones consisted of flip-phones, Blackberries, and varying Nokia Phones with keypads as well as 3G internet.

Now, aside from different designs, phones have 5G connections.

Parang computer na siya on a phone," Gab, a millennial phone user, said.

In 2009, phone users had a more difficult time watching videos and streaming movies. In contrast, 2019 phones have access to various movie and streaming apps as well as YouTube.

Where Filipinos had to visit malls to buy things before, they may now shop without leaving their homes through mobile and online shopping.

A decade ago, getting lost was a more serious concern. Now, people may use applications such as Waze.

In 2009, people only in texts. In 2019, there are various messaging applications such as Viber, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

GMA News chanced upon a 15-year-old boy who was buying his cellphone.

Pablito Ambay admitted that he had no knowledge of 2009 phones as well as how to use the landline.

"'Nung usong-uso yung landline before, bata pa siya eh.

Though social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter already existed in 2009, the "dark side of social media" was not as apparent before such as bashing and fake news.

However, as mobile gadgets became more high tech and telecommunication companies urged more people to subscribe to mobile data, gadgets became a bigger part of the daily lives of people.
