Twitter calls for public input as it revamps verification program

Twitter has plans to relaunch its verification program and it's asking for the public's help.

On Wednesday, the social media platform called for feedback through a survey so it could shape its Verification Policy based on public input.

In a statement, Twitter said it had paused its verification program three years ago "after hearing feedback that it felt arbitrary and confusing to many people," and it has since been deprioritized.

"Since then, we haven’t been clear about who can become verified and when, why an account might be unverified, or what it means to be verified," it said.

Twitter has now shared the draft of its new verification policy for the public to review.

There, it listed down the "core types" of notable accounts that could be verified, namely:

  • Government
  • Companies, Brands and Non- Profit Organizations
  • News
  • Entertainment
  • Sports
  • Activists, Organizers, and Other Influential Individuals

According to the policy, the verified badge — a.k.a. the blue check beside a user's display name — lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic.

"We plan to relaunch verification, including a new public application process, in early 2021. But first, we need to update our verification policy with your help," Twitter said.

If you prefer to Tweet your feedback, Twitter said you can use the hashtag #VerificationFeedback. —JCB, GMA News
