Philippines climbs in global ranking of internet speeds


The Philippines climbed several notches in a global ranking of mobile and fixed broadband internet speeds, according to the May 2021 Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.

In terms of mobile internet, the Philippines climbed seven spots to rank 77th out of 137 countries included in the list.

Average mobile download speeds improved to 31.98 megabits per second (Mbps) from 29.12 Mbps in April 2021 and 14.15 Mbps in May 2020.

Mobile upload speeds likewise improved to 8.74 Mbps from 7.65 Mbps in April 2021 and 5.60 Mbps in May 2020.

Mobile latency for the month stood at 30 milliseconds, faster than 33 milliseconds in April 2021 and 45 milliseconds the same month last year.

The Philippines also improved its global ranking in terms of fixed broadband as it jumped 15 spots to rank 65th out of 180 countries.

Average download speeds came in at 58.73 Mbps, up from 49.31 Mbps in April 2021 and 22.29 Mbps in May 2020.

Upload speeds stood at 57.40 Mbps versus 47.83 Mbps in April 2021 and 21.49 Mbps the same month in 2020.

Latency averaged 12 milliseconds, faster than 22 milliseconds in April 2021 and 33 milliseconds in May last year.

The Speedtest Global Index considers countries with at least 300 unique user results for mobile or fixed broadband to be ranked in either category.—AOL, GMA News
