Marilyn slows down, less likely to make landfall

Light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers are expected to prevail across the country as Tropical Depression Marilyn moved slower northwest off Batanes late Friday morning.

According to PAGASA's 11 a.m. weather bulletin, occasional light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers during thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the rest of Mimaropa and Visayas.

Meanwhile, frequent light to moderate with occasional heavy rains are expected over Palawan, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and Bangsamoro.

As of 10 a.m., PAGASA said the center of Tropical Depression Marilyn was 1,045 kilometers East of Basco, Batanes. It was moving northwestward at 10 kph, while packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

It remains "less likely" to make landfall in the country throughout the forecast period.

As of PAGASA's advisory, residents in affected areas, especially those living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, are advised to take precautionary measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates

Sea travel, on the other hand, is "risky" especially for small seacrafts over the central and eastern seaboards of Visayas and the seaboards of Mindanao due to potentially rough sea condition. —Margaret Claire Layug/KBK, GMA News
