Quiel now a typhoon, seen to cause rain over Mindoro, Palawan


Severe tropical storm Quiel intensified into a typhoon at 2 p.m. on Friday.

In its 5 p.m. severe weather bulletin, PAGASA said the typhoon would indirectly bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over the Mindoro Provinces and Palawan.

PAGASA added that the tail-end of the cold front would bring moderate with occasional heavy rains over Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte between Friday and Saturday.

Residents of the affected areas, especially those living in areas identified to be susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, were advised by PAGASA to take precautionary measures and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

No tropical cyclone wind signal was raised over any part of the country.

However, gale warnings were raised over Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, and La Union.

The weather bureau cautioned sea travel over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the western seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon due to possible rough sea conditions.

At 4 p.m. on Friday, Typhoon Quiel was last estimated at 430 kilometers west of Coron, Palawan with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

The typhoon is moving southwest at 10 kph and is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between Friday night and Saturday morning.

According to PAGASA, it may head generally westward towards Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Halong was last estimated at 3,535 kilometers east northeast of extreme northern Luzon with maximum winds of 100 kph and gustiness of up to 125 kph at 2 p.m. on Friday.
