Signal No. 1 in Ilocos Norte, other parts of N.Luzon as rains from Ambo still expected in affected areas


Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted in Ilocos Norte and other parts of northern Luzon as Tropical Storm Ambo accelerated while moving northward over the West Philippine Sea, PAGASA said Saturday.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said that because of this, light to moderate and at times heavy rains could still be expected in these affected areas.

TCW Signal No. 1 has been lifted over the following areas:

  • Ilocos Norte
  • Batanes
  • Babuyan Islands
  • the northwestern portion of Cagayan (Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Sanchez Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros)
  • the northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna)

Winds with speeds of 30 to 60 kph are prevailing or expected to prevail in these areas in the next 36 hours.

In Metro Manila and the rest of the country, thunderstorms or localized thunderstorms may be experienced for the rest of the day.

By Saturday, the rest of the country can expect a generally improved weather, PAGASA said.

As of 4 p.m. of Saturday, the center of  Ambo was estimated at 110 km north northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, with maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It is moving north at 30 kph.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains are expected on Saturday night over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and the northern portion of Aurora.

Moderate with at times heavy rains will be experienced over Batanes and Babuyan Islands between Saturday night and Sunday evening.

Residents in these areas are advised to take appropriate measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates.

Sea travel will be risky for all types of seacraft over the seaboards of areas under the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal.

Ambo is likely to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday afternoon, May 18. 

Thunderstorms

PAGASA earlier said moderate to heavy rainshowers with lightning and strong winds were expected over Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac Saturday afternoon.

In its advisory, the weather agency said that heavy to intense rainshowers with lightning and strong winds were being experienced in Zambales, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Batangas, and Quezon.

Specific areas affected are: Masinloc, Palauig, Carmona, General Mariano Alvarez, Silang, Amadeo, Indang, Trece Martires, Santa Rosa, Binan, Cabuyao, Calamba, Santa Maria, Mabitac, Los Banos, Pililla, Tanay, Cardona, Antipolo, Laurel, Calaca, Lipa, Padre Garcia, Lobo, San Juan, San Antonio, Perez, General Nakar, San Narciso).
