LPA off Cagayan may develop into tropical depression within 48 hours —PAGASA

A low-pressure area (LPA) last located at the east of Cagayan may intensify into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours, PAGASA said Sunday afternoon.

In an advisory, the state weather bureau said the LPA was last seen 160 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City.

It will be named “Helen” when it develops into a cyclone.

“Owing to its proximity to land, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 may be immediately raised over some provinces in Northern Luzon in the initial Severe Weather Bulletin,” PAGASA said.

It also projected that the weather disturbance will “pass very close or make landfall in the vicinity of mainland Cagayan - Babuyan Islands area in the next 36 hours.”

PAGASA advised disaster management offices to monitor updates.

The next advisory on the LPA will be issued on Monday morning.

Weather outlook

Meanwhile, PAGASA said the LPA will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Quezon.

The Southwest Monsoon is also seen to cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, and the rest of CALABARZON.

As for the rest of the country, localized thunderstorms may bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers mostly in the afternoon or evening. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
