PAGASA: Siony may become a severe tropical storm on Tuesday

Siony has slightly weakened but remains a tropical storm as it continued its west northwest track on Sunday night, PAGASA has said.

In its 11 p.m. severe weather bulletin on Siony, PAGASA said Siony might become a severe tropical storm on Tuesday.

Its forecast track showed that it is expected to hit the northern portion of Luzon later this week.

“It may intensify to severe tropical storm category during the period when it becomes almost stationary on Tuesday,” it added.

PAGASA said the cyclone would unlikely have a direct effect on weather and coastal water conditions in the Philippines in the next two to three days.

The center of Siony was last seen 990 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It continues to move west-northwestward at 30 kph.

PAGASA said Siony is likely to remain a tropical storm within the next 36 to 48 hours.

By Monday evening, Siony will be 770 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan.

By Tuesday evening, it will move slightly to 780 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan.

By Wednesday evening, it will be 415 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan.

By Thursday night, it will be 85 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City.

By Friday evening, the cyclone will be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility or 670 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan. -NB, GMA News
