PAGASA announces onset of Amihan season

The country may expect surges of cold temperatures in the coming months as PAGASA announced the onset of the northeast monsoon or "Amihan" season.

In a statement, PAGASA said it has observed the gradual cooling of the surface air temperature over the northeastern part of Luzon.

"With these developments, the northeast wind flow is expected to gradually become more dominant over Northern Luzon, bringing cold and dry air," it said.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said with the ongoing La Niña, the northeast monsoon rainfall may be enhanced that could trigger floods, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides over susceptible areas.

It advised the public and all concerned government agencies to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of these events.

Earlier in the day, PAGASA raised the yellow warning level in Kalayaan Islands in Palawan due to the troughs of a tropical depression.

Flooding is possible in low-lying areas and landslides are possible in mountainous areas.

The islands are predicted to have 7.5 to 15mm rainfall in an hour within the next two hours.
