Signal No. 3 in 4 areas as Odette slightly intensifies —PAGASA

Four areas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 as Typhoon Odette slightly intensified while decelerating westward, the weather bureau PAGASA said on Wednesday night.

Based on PAGASA’s 11 p.m. weather bulletin, the center of Odette was spotted at 470 kilometer east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.

It has sustained maximum winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center, and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

According to the weather bureau, it was moving westward at 15 kph.

PAGASA said on Wednesday night through Thursday evening, heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Caraga, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Southern Leyte, and Bohol.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening through Friday evening, heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Central Visayas, Western Visayas, and Palawan including Calamian Islands, Cuyo, and Cagayancillo Islands.

The weather bureau advised public that scattered to widespread flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps, and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall.

PAGASA said destructive typhoon-force winds will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS  No. 3 is in effect. This may bring moderate to heavy damage to structures and vegetation.

Damaging winds reaching gale- to storm-force strength will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS No. 2 is in effect.

Strong winds (strong breeze to near gale) with higher gusts will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS No. 1 is currently in effect during the passage of the typhoon.

In the next 24 hours, PAGASA said moderate to very high seas (1.2 to 10.0 m) will be experienced over the seaboards of areas where TCWS is in effect, especially in the open sea areas.

Under the influence of Odette and the prevailing Northeast Monsoon, a Gale Warning remains in effect for several coastal waters not under any wind signal, including the seaboards of Northern Luzon, the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, and the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon and Mindanao, and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao not under any wind signal.

Further intensification is expected today through tomorrow as the typhoon crosses the Philippine Sea and may reach a peak intensity of 155 kph prior to making landfall Thursday afternoon.

Odette may see some slight weakening as it crosses northeastern Mindanao, Visayas, and Palawan, but it is forecast to remain within the typhoon category.

“Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” PAGASA added.—LDF, GMA News
