Agaton has parts of Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao under Signal No. 1

Portions of Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao were placed under Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression Agaton slowly moved over Basey town in Samar.

According to PAGASA's severe weather bulletin at 8 p.m. on Monday, the center of Agaton was estimated at 7 p.m. in the vicinity of Basey.

It had maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center, and gustiness of up to 60 kph, and central pressure of 1000 hPa.

Its tropical cyclone winds extend outwards up to 150 kilometers from the center.

Signal No.1 (Strong winds prevailing or expected within the next 36 hours) has been raised over the following areas:

Luzon

The southern portion of Masbate (Dimasalang, Palanas, Cataingan, Pio V. Corpuz, Esperanza, Placer, Cawayan)

Visayas

Eastern Samar, Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, the northeastern portion of Cebu (Daanbantayan, Medellin, Tabogon, Bogo City, Borbon, Sogod) including Camotes Island

Mindanao

Dinagat Islands and Bucas Grande Islands

These areas will have strong winds prevailing or are expected within the next 36 hours. Winds may also result in minimal to minor threat to life and property.

Strong winds (strong breeze to near gale conditions) will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS No. 1 is currently in effect.

In the next 24 hours, rough to very rough seas (2.8 to 4.5 m) will prevail over the seaboards of areas where Wind Signal No. 1 is hoisted.

Moreover, moderate to rough seas (1.2 to 3.4 m) will also prevail over the remaining seaboards of the country that are not under any wind signal or gale warning.

The weather bureau said Agaton is forecast to remain a tropical depression.

Agaton may further weaken into a remnant low pressure area by Wednesday afternoon or evening as it becomes assimilated within the circulation of Malakas, the weather disturbance just outside the Philippne Area of rerposnsibility.

“Any significant intensification will likely be inhibited by the binary interaction of Agaton and Malakas,” PAGASA said.

“However, due to land interaction, further weakening into a remnant low before emerging over the Philippine Sea is possible,” it added.

The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be issued at 11:00 p.m. —NB, GMA News
