Signal No. 1 up over Catanduanes, 2 other areas due to Rosal

The Low Pressure Area (LPA) located east of Juban, Sorsogon intensified into a tropical depression at 8 a.m. on Saturday and has been called Rosal.

In its 11 a.m. update, PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over the following Luzon areas due to Tropical Depression Rosal:

  • Catanduanes;
  • the eastern portion of Camarines Sur (Caramoan, Presentacion, Garchitorena, Lagonoy, San Jose, Tigaon, Sagñay); and
  • the eastern portion of Albay (City of Tabaco, Bacacay, Rapu-Rapu, Malilipot, Malinao, Tiwi).

Under TCWS No. 1, winds of 39-61 km/h may be expected in at least 36 hours or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will thus be possible over the Bicol Region and Quezon, moderate to heavy rains will be possible over Mimaropa and Western Visayas, and light to moderate with at times heavy rains likely over Aurora and the rest of Calabarzon and Visayas.

A marine gale warning is in effect over the seaboards of Northern Luzon under the influence of the surge of the Northeast Monsoon.

In the next 24 hours, the combined effects of the surge of the Northeast Monsoon and the tropical cyclone may also bring moderate to rough seas (1.2 to 3.0 m) over the seaboards of Central Luzon and the eastern and western seaboards of Southern Luzon.

The conditions may be risky for those using small seacraft, and mariners are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating in the said conditions.

Tropical Depression Rosal is forecast to decelerate while moving generally northward in the next 12 hours before turning north northeastward or northeastward for the remainder of the forecast period.

The center of Tropical Depression Rosal was estimated based on all available data at 110 km north northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 315 km east of Infanta, Quezon (14.5 °N, 124.6 °E).

It is moving northwestward at 20 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h. —Jamil Santos/KG, GMA Integrated News
